Zakopane as the capital of the Polish Tatras has plenty of options for kids. Depending on the season and weather, you can choose to organize sport activities and easy hiking trips in the Tatra Mountains, as well as visit indoor Zakopane attractions like the aquapark, hot springs or the Oscypek Museum (traditional, local cheese museum).

Below we will outline our recommendations for the best Zakopane hiking ideas for families with kids.

In the summer, we definitely recommend a Zakopane hiking trip in one of the Tatra valleys with easy access such as the Strazyska valley, Chochołowska valley or Kościeliska valley. Each of these has a chalet or mountain hut where you can enjoy a local meal. It is a great opportunity to rest and admire the lovely mountain scenery. Depending on the chosen option you will need to plan between 3 to 4 hours duration and between 250 – 350 m elevation difference. Each of the beautiful trails is surrounded by greenery, natural rocky mountains and streams.

Another popular destination is Morskie Oko Lake. Hiking to Morskie Oko Lake leads you on a paved trail, a comfortable option even during the winter. The distance to walk is around 8 km one way. If you feel it is to much for your family, hop on a horse carriage which you will find waiting at the entrance to the Tatra National Park. Morskie Oko Lake is the largest lake in the Tatra mountains. The place is touristy but worth seeing anyway. The walls of the Mieguszowiecki summits falling straight to the lake look extraordinary.

So, when in doubt on what to do in Zakopane, start thinking about one of the Tatra valleys. It will be an great experience with nature and truly didactic day for you and your kids.

Please always remember to check the weather forecast before you decide to go. The weather in the Tatra mountains changes quite quickly.

If you don't feel sure about your fitness condition or mountain experience, it is recommended to hire a licenced Tatra mountain guide. A guide will take care of your safety, give you alternate trail options and tell you about the Tatra mountains nature, history and traditions.
